Resisting the Urge to Flitter

Web surfing can be very seductive. You can spend hours upon hours flittering from one page to the next. It becomes an endless stream of curious little instances. It can be a lot like swimming in an ocean thats only a foot deep. And while that sounds like a criticism it is not. What it is though is a warning for webmasters.

If you are a webmaster or blogger (or both) you are at the computer. And spending hours at the computer probably has you trained to do a lot of flittering. But…. you have to realize that if you are creating content for websites or blogs you absolutely, positively cannot flitter!!!

Spend the time, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, heck 20 hours if that is what it takes to make the one page or post you are working on the absolute best you can make it. Do you research, rewrite it, check your facts, build the thing, take the pictures, write the assembly, explain the detail, find the associate product links that people will like. Do the work and take the time to do it right. Make it the best you can make it.

Now let me tell you why!

I have single webpages out there that get literally thousands of hits a day -yes, every day each page gets thousands of hits. Because I did my absolute best to make them really good. I didn’t flitter on these pages.

Whats the payoff?

Well, I rarely go back to these pages. They are done and I have moved on. Yet they continue to bring me high quality traffic. And beats me how long they are going to continue to do that. Probably for years.

Don’t you think its a good idea to spend ten hours working on a single page that will bring you thousands of hits a day for years? I sure do.

And as far as thousands of hits a day goes, thats baby food. I write about some very specialized niche stuff. If you pick a very popular subject you could probably get tens of thousands of hits a day. Really.

There is real power in the internet. You can reach millions of people. But you aren’t going to reach them with junk. If you create good stuff people, search engines, and the gods that be on the web will notice. And they will come.

One really good page is worth more than ten thousand pages of junk. Do your best.

Be a part of the New World created by Google and Amazon

Sometimes it is very hard to see the forest for the trees. And does a fish even see the water?

Okay, those are some serious cliches but they are so very true. We are in the meat and potatoes of an incredible revolution and it is very easy to not even see it.

The world has changed, and continues to change in amazing ways. I mean that it is now no big deal for a person to be at a computer in the spare room a few hours every day and making a living. Yup, it’s true and there is an awful lot of it going on. I mean a lot!! Do you have any idea how much money google and amazon are paying out every month to people that are doing this?

I gave some serious thought to this a few days ago when google adsense went down for less than a day. I went to the adsense forum to get an update and I got caught up in all the discussions. There were an enormous amount of people, from all over the world commenting on the downage. it was incredible. There was near panic. But It isn’t the panic I want to talk about. Adsense is making an impact on the world. It is very clear.  The same thing happened a few months back when the amazon associate program reporting system went down.

So whats going on?

Well, Do you have any idea how much it costs to build and run an office building? Lighting, heat, taxes, and a thousand other things. It’s big dollars but with a work at home set up all those costs disappear. It makes for a leaner (and more effective) business. And don’t even get me started on gas prices. All of a sudden not having a commute to the office makes a big difference in how much a person spends on gas.

And, Do you have any idea how much it used to cost to get a marketing message to 100k people?

How much does it cost now? Well, if you are crafty, creative, or just plain persistent you can reach 100k people  at practically no cost. Pretty effective business model huh?

And let’s not even get into targeting. Just a few years ago the mantra of every marketer was this: “50% of my marketing expense is effective. I just don’t know which 50%”

Now, with the internet you can know exactly what works. You can know exactly how many people take action on your materials, you can know if they buy, what they buy, and why. Down to the person. Pretty darn effective. And you can split test on a continuous basis the improve the process.  We are talking a paradigm shift here. And all from your spare room.

I am telling you. The world is changing and you can be part of it. Crank up the website or blog, create some good content, sign up for an affiliate program and keep it going. Be persistent and be part of it.
